"Simple cycling for all", sums up the aim of this innovative approach to outdoor exercise and active travel.
What is it?
Based in Radstock near to the start of the Colliers Way (part of two sections of Route 24 of the National Cycle Network ) this community cycling scheme offers people the chance to take part in led rides and receive cycle skills training from a qualified instructor. The traffic free sections of the route provide a safe and relaxing environment to cycle in.
Why take part?
Cycling is excellent gentle exercise and the scheme will be ideal if you haven’t cycled for a long time and want to increase your confidence and refresh your skills. The led rides take place in small groups and can also offer the opportunity to meet new friends, or if you’re from a community group or organisation we can arrange a ride suitable for you.
Who can take part?
The rides are open to anyone over the age of 15. We are especially keen to offer the scheme to older members of the community and those who may have health issues.
Not cycled for a long time?
If you are unsure about your cycling skills you can come for a trial ride first. Find out what bikes we have and try one out, you'll probably find you're not as bad as you think!
How can I take part if I don’t have a bike?
A variety of the latest bikes are available for loan through the scheme which cater for a range of requirements. Modern bikes provide a higher level of comfort and are easier to use than older bikes. Our bikes have easy to use gears and are serviced regularly.
How much will it cost?
- Cost per session with own cycle £2.00 - subject to a safety check from the cycle leader.
- Session cost with hired cycle £3.50
How far will I be riding?
All the rides are tailored to the fitness and ability levels of those taking part although the average ride will be between 8 to 15 kilometres. For those wishing to go that bit further our coordinator will be happy to advise you on suitable local routes.
What rides do we have?
We have 3 level of rides:
- Slow and Easy - Those that have not cycled for a long time and that would prefer to cycle on traffic free paths only
- Rolling - Those that have recent cycle experience and are used to cycling on paths and quiet roads.
- Explorer - By arrangement and sometimes with other groups or clubs (such as the Somer Valley Cycle Club)
